Annex 42 The Simulation of Building-Integrated Fuel Cell and Other Cogeneration Systems (COGEN-SIM)

Summary

The Annex will address the modelling of building-integrated cogeneration systems by developing and incorporating cogeneration models within whole-building simulation programs. Emphasis will be placed upon fuel cell cogeneration systems and technologies suitable for use in new and existing single- and low-rise multi-family residential dwellings will be considered. The models are developed at a resolution which is appropriate for whole-building simulation operating at sub-hourly time-steps.

The overall goal of the proposed Annex is to develop simulation methods that advance the design, operation, and analysis of residential cogeneration systems. The Annex's objectives include:

  • Develop models to simulate the performance of fuel cells and other cogeneration systems and associated equipment, such as controllers, thermal cooling, thermal storage, refrigeration, fuel processors, and power conditioning systems.
  • Characterize occupant-driven electrical usage patterns for various demographic groups and geographic locations. These loads are a significant component of the thermodynamic system that must be modelled by the simulation tools.
  • Implement the new models into existing whole-building simulation programs.
  • Validate the models and their implementation into the whole-building simulation programs.
  • Perform technical, environmental, and economic assessments of selected cogeneration applications using the new
    models.

The annex is organised into three subtasks:

  • Subtask A: Characterization of cogeneration systems and occupant-driven electrical and domestic hot water
    usage patterns
  • Subtask B: Development, implementation and validation of cogeneration system models in building
    simulation programs
  • Subtask C: Technical, environmental and economic assessment of selected cogeneration applications using the models developed in Subtask B

Annex 42 used the domestic hot water load generator developed by Annex 26 to produce domestic hot water profiles for residential housing, which are contained in ASCII format in this file.

Electric Load Profiles (Subtask A)
Canadian Occupant-driven Electrical Load Profiles (ESP-r format):

This file contains a set of nine generated electrical load profiles and a set of seven measured electrical load profiles for single detached houses in Canada.
The synthetic profiles were created using the NRC profile generator and have a 5-minute time basis. The set contains profiles representing families with a high, medium, and low electricity consumption.
Seven measured electrical load profiles were also created using measured data from detached houses that were gathered by Hydro Quebec from Jan 1994 - Sep 1996. The data values represent the average non-HVAC electric draw of the house (in Watts) over 15 minute periods.
All profiles are contained in .fcl files for direct use with ESP-r. The profiles are also available in EXCEL format (see below).

Specific European Electrical Profiles:

The three files presented here represent the actual electricity consumption profiles recorded for three dwellings which we consider to be most representative of low, medium and high electric energy consumption amongst the sample of buildings monitored. The profiles cover a full year of average power consumption over 5 minute time intervals in two flats in Newcastle (England) and one town house in Llanelli (Wales). These profiles are presented as being the best current option to represent 'standard' European domestic profiles based on the data available to the Annex.

Standard European Electrical Profiles:
(European Electrical Standard Profiles - Annex 42 September 2006.zip)
The average electricity consumption of 69 houses in the UK is presented here in the electricity draw profiles for characteristic days for each season (winter, summer, and shoulder season) for both the weekday and weekend situation. The daily profiles are composed of the average consumption per 5 minute time slots over a month in the specifc season. An annual profile based upon the characteristic daily profiles is also included.
